OZschwitz: Oppressive government brainwashing camps (schools) to fight truancy

The Queensland government has set new guidelines for schools to deal with chronic truancy by making learning "more attractive" and closely monitoring absentees.

The policies were developed following a research project at several schools in Brisbane's south where absenteeism was identified as a serious problem.

Education Minister Rod Welford said there were many types of absenteeism and each required a different approach.

"Some students have immense problems in attending school and there are often (many) issues that make school unattractive," Mr Welford said.

"The important thing is for schools to understand the cause of chronic absenteeism and address it."

Schools will be asked to develop an attendance policy, record and follow up absences, monitor patterns of non-attendance and collaborate with other agencies.

In addition, schools will be encouraged to develop a "positive culture" to make going to school more attractive, Mr Welford said.

"Some students actually come to hate school and we've really got to get over that problem.

"The (guidelines) will help schools better engage students (and) keep them at school."

Some Queensland students were missing up to 25 per cent of the school year, which left them at risk of being disadvantaged in the future, he said.

"Anyone who is away from school that that extent is missing out on academic learning and social interaction.

"Absenteeism can have a significant effect on a student's education and can be associated with early school leaving and limited employment and life choices."
