SIR TOM Hunter is to head a list of entrepreneurs who will address university students at an event designed to encourage them to go into business.
The former retail tycoon will take the podium at the Scottish Institute for Enterprise’s (SIE) annual student summit at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow on Thursday. Other entrepreneurs addressing the summit will include Mick Jackson of social enterprise WildHearts, Joanne McLeod of tea company Brewhaha and Oli Norman of PR and events firm, Dada.
Hunter said he hoped to tell the students a mix of “war stories, nuggets of useful information and rev them up to go and start up their businesses”. He would avoid “well-worn” subjects such as determination to emphasise they should “follow something that really inspires them and not worry too much about having everything worked out beforehand. Learn by doing. Otherwise, you often never get started”.
SIE chief executive Fiona Godsman said: “Going into business is a much more attractive proposition because there’s so much competition for jobs at present.
“When you’re a new graduate, it’s a good time to start a company because mostly you don’t have the same responsibilities as someone who’s got a mortgage or children. And it’s less of a hardship living on little money when you’re used to student budgets.”
